MAY 25 - June 24, 2021

TUESDAY and THURSDAY MOrnings 10-11:30 AM

SESSIONS HELD ON BOTH TUESDAY AND THURSDAY MORNINGS. THE INSTRUCTION IS REPEATED LIVE ON BOTH DAYS. PARTICIPANTS CAN REGISTER TO JOIN ONCE PER WEEK FOR THE 5 - WEEK PERIOD. (OR, YES! OF COURSE, PARTICIPANTS ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO ATTEND BOTH DAYS EVERY WEEK IF THEY LIKE !!!)

Join teaching artist Jamie Boyle for a virtual weaving workshop! No prior weaving experience necessary or expected. Explore the expressive potential of fiber and cloth, and learn the basics of weaving on a frame loom, in this series of five interactive online workshops. The sessions are free and open to Brooklyn-based older adults and brought to you through the Brooklyn Arts Council SU-CASA programming. Participants can weave with ordinary materials found at home, and supplies kits will be sent (at no cost!) to the first 20 participants to register!

Sessions will be held online via Zoom. Each week, teaching artist Jamie Boyle will offer the same live instruction twice, once on Tuesday morning and again on Thursday morning. Participants can choose to attend one session per week for the 5 week period. Or, of course, participants can opt to join in as often as they wish!

Each week’s session will focus on a different weaving technique. We will begin the first session by “weaving connections;” we will use ordinary materials found at home (materials already imbued with previous uses, meanings, and narratives) to explore the basic elements of weaving and create small works of woven art. The following four weeks will build on those basics, trying new techniques and materials to explore ways that we might express ideas, emotions, and narrative, as we create small weavings. Supply kits will contain enough material for participants to continue their creative weaving practices after the sessions conclude.

Other ways to connect and weave together can be arranged if you would like to participate, but the times don’t work for you—or if zoom doesn’t work for you. Please connect with Jamie at the email or phone number listed below.

The program is open to Brooklyn-based older adults.

Participants are welcome to register and join in any time between May 25 - June 24. Attendance at all of the sessions is not required. Recorded instructional videos will also be available weekly to all who register.

Below are a few more notes to address some questions and concerns, but please feel free to reach out to Jamie. She would love to hear from you!

How do I get the link for the Zoom meetings? Zoom link and more information will be sent upon registration.

A note on materials: As noted, participants will be eligible to receive a supplies kit in the mail, at no cost! The supply kits are limited to the first 20 registrations. Arrangements for delivery (most likely by USPS) will be made upon registration. The supply box will include a small frame loom, a selection of yarn, and a few yarn needles and other notions to help you weave!

During the first sessions (Tuesday May 25 and Thursday May 27), we will weave with ordinary materials found at home: A small square of cardboard, scissors, string, yarn, or yarn-like materials (paper strips, shoelaces, rubber bands, ribbons, plastic bags). Participants will always be able to weave with the materials readily at-hand, though every effort will be made to get the supply boxes to participants after this first session.

I have never tried weaving before, is this for beginners? Yes! No prior weaving experience is expected; beginners (and all weaving experience levels) are welcomed.

Two times a week! That’s too much ! You don’t have to come twice a week, though you are welcome to do so, of course! Jamie is offering the same live instructional demonstration twice a week, to accommodate as many participants as possible. When you register, you can choose to attend the Tuesday sessions, the Thursday sessions, or a mix of both.

What if I can’t make it to all of the sessions? Not to worry ! We hope you will still register and join in as often as you are able to. The instructional demonstrations will be recorded and available to participants after each session, so if you miss a session, you will be able to view the lesson. Jamie will also be available to check in with you in between sessions, if you have questions or specific weaving wishes !

I will miss the first couple sessions, can I still participate? You can join in anytime! As noted, the instructional demonstrations will be recorded and available as videos to you. You can also be in touch with Jamie to arrange an individualized session.

I am not able to join in via Zoom, but I still want to weave! Are there other ways to participate? Yes! Contact Jamie at jamieannboyle@gmail.com, or by phone at 412-606-2498—or fill out the registration form—to arrange a way to connect!
